Yellow Patch

Yellow Patch

On my trip Yellow Patch has been one of my favourite anchorages because it has a massive sand dune.

Yellow Patch is near Cape Capricorn on Curtis Island. Cape Capricorn is named due to its location on the Tropic of Capricorn.

Going into Yellow Patch we hit the bottom. The current took us out off course. We tried to put the sail out to lean the boat over to get the keel off the ground but it didn’t work. We put the anchor out instead and waited for the tide to come in so the water would get deeper. The plan worked and dad said if we hit again we won’t be able to go to Yellow Patch. We got back on our track and lucky we didn’t hit the bottom again.

Once in we tried to get a deep spot so when the tide went out we wouldn’t hit the bottom again. We had a quick climb up the sand dune while dad was making dinner.

The next day we went for another climb on the sand dune and coming back I was towed behind the rubber duckie. It was so fun. I fell off a couple of times. There was lots of current and I GOT EATEN ALIVE BY MOZZIES!!!!!!

6pm that night we left Yellow Patch to another Bay. It was really rollie and I couldn’t get to sleep. I was up till 9.30.

Dad explained that the Tropic of Capricorn is where the sun comes down to in summer. See the line through Australia on the orange. That’s where we are. In winter the sun is above the tropic of Cancer the other side of the equator.

  1. Hi finn . You will have to try and find some sand dunes back home to slide down ! I wonder if you could find ones as big as the ones you have been sliding down?...?. Kj
